Wedding Cakes For The DIY Bride

It is becoming increasingly popular for couples and their families to style and dress their wedding venues with their hand made wedding crafts, floral displays and wedding props.

The DIY wedding really does give you the opportunity to be unique on your wedding day, add your own personal touch and involve many members of your family and friends and even save you some money!

So why not have a DIY wedding Cake!

My DIY Wedding Cakes are made exactly the same as a bespoke  wedding cake ordered from me,  made with our free range eggs, home made jam and high quality ingredients. Each wedding cake  tier has 3 layers, and is approx 4″ in height, available in any shape or size.

Your DIY Wedding Cake can either be coated in Butter Cream or Sugar Paste Icing, and taken away ready for you to add your own creativity.

This is the perfect type of wedding cake to have if you have a friend or family member that really wants to make your wedding cake, but as many Brides will tell you, once the full scale of the baking and preparation of your wedding cake is fully thought through, the many hours needed just 2 days before your wedding are really not available.

Your DIY Wedding Cake can be ‘stacked’ ready for you to decorate and boxed in a heavy duty wedding cake transportation box, which is extremely stable and easy to carry. I will also add  ribbon  around your wedding cake to match your wedding colours.

There is no need for you to worry about inserting cake dowels and making sure your wedding cake is level and not leaning over, or you can have each wedding cake boxed separately for you to display yourself. This is ideal if you are considering having a’Wedding Cake Table’

Even though your DIY Wedding Cake leaves me undecorated, I will give you any advice you need on how to add your chosen decoration, to ensure you have a beautiful wedding cake.

My price for a 10″, 8″ & 6″ round DIY wedding cake coated in buttercream is £195, sugar paste icing is £285. Serving approx 80 portions.

There will be a slightly higher price if you wanted to have coloured icing.

These prices are for collection only, where you can collect your DIY wedding cake the day or morning before your wedding, or I can deliver to your wedding venue where your wedding cake will be set up ready for you to decorate.

So if you or a family member are looking to take on the roll of ‘Wedding Cake Decorator’, then please contact me, it would be lovely to hear of your ideas and make your DIY wedding cake for you.

My website is full of wedding cake ideas and also has details of my bespoke wedding cake service.

Look forward to hearing from you,

3 Tiers of Gold at Hadlow Manor, Tonbridge, Kent

Hadlow Manor is set in the Kent Countryside, between Tunbridge Wells and West Malling.

An elegant 18th century Manor house with lovely gardens and grounds.

The Bride and Groom held their wedding in the Hadlow Room, high ceilings, chandeliers and paned glass windows overlooking the gardens.

Their colour scheme was navy blue, white and gold, with the addition of lace, pearls and some sparkle!

I was asked to design their wedding cake to reflect these colours and after our  wedding cake tasting meeting, I got to the drawing board and started to put their ideas together. Whenever a Bride and Groom ask me to design a wedding cake for them, I always draw a sketch to give them (and myself) an idea of how their ideas can come together.

I designed 2 pictures with different ideas of how their wedding cake could look and emailed them over to the bride, and after discussions with the Bride we made a few alterations.

The final design of their wedding cake had ‘Rose Ruffles’ on the bottom tier, lightly sprayed in gold, the middle tier was wrapped in gold lace, and the top tier was decorated with gold lace and hand made sugar flowers in gold with gold hand painted edges.

A scattering of pearls was placed between each tier.

A beautiful wedding cake design, which completed their wedding colour schemes so well, with gold sashes on their chairs, navy blue lace table runners and pearls scattered across their tables.

Adding ‘Ruffles’ and ‘Lace’ to wedding cake makes a stunning wedding cake and can be in all colours. I have made a similar wedding cake in peach, which can be seen on my website on the ‘Ruffles’ & ‘Lace’ page.

Naked Wedding Cake for High Rocks, Tunbridge Wells

I was asked by the Bride & Groom to create them a 4 tier naked wedding cake to compliment their wedding at High Rocks, in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

Not only is High Rocks a stunning Country House but it is steeped in history, with an old steam train platform in its grounds and has its very own private ‘garden’ with famous Rocks that make a great photo opportunity for weddings.

The Barn, framed by oak beams, inside High Rocks was the perfect setting for their Naked Wedding Cake and they had a custom made wooden cake box with their name and wedding date stamped on it.  Wooden boxes were also made for the wedding cards and gifts and for floral displays.

The flowers used to decorate their Naked Wedding Cake were in colours of blues, pinks and white. When flowers are used to decorated my Naked Wedding Cakes I usually ask Brides to order a few extra from their florist to ensure they match all the other flowers they are having for their wedding.

Their 4 Tier Naked Wedding cake was filled with strawberries, drizzled in strawberry couli and filled with vanilla buttercream, served in the evening to over 100 guests.

Wise Wedding Venue, Whetstead Farm

Wise Wedding Venue is the perfect place for couples wishing to have a very secluded wedding, where your creativity has no limits. A marquee set within secluded woods a waits your decoration.

Anna & Mike came to see me earlier in the year for a cake tasting and to discuss their wedding plans, where they wished to have a Naked wedding cake for their wedding day to serve as a dessert and their wedding breakfast.

Wanting to have a relaxed, summer meadow feel to their wedding, they choose a mix of seasonal flowers in all shapes, sizes and colours, displayed on the tables in bottles of different heights and colours.

I used a log cake stand to enhance the woodland feel to their wedding, decorated with more of their summer meadow flowers.

Anna & Mike had a 4 Tier Naked Wedding Cake, all vanilla, filled with buttercream and fresh strawberries and blueberries.

More of my Naked Wedding Cakes can be seen on my website.

‘Life As A Wedding Cake Maker!’- Wedding Venues

Part of making wedding cakes is of course delivering them to the wedding venues.

Visiting wedding venues is always a great experience, I get to see places that I have never been to before and as you can imagine some are set in the most stunning of locations and tucked away down country lanes where you hope the wedding venue will be at the end of it!

So today I thought I’d share with you, some of the wedding venues  I’ve been to so far and it will give you an idea of what is involved in the ‘Life as a Wedding Cake Maker!’

I am not going to say ‘My Top Ten’ or my ‘Favourite’ as everywhere that I have travelled to has been amazing, whether small or large and it is lovely to see  all of the Brides ideas coming to life with their chosen table plans, table and venue decorations and transforming sometimes plain halls into themed stages.

I’ll start from the West of the country and make my way back to Kent.

I had a great time putting this collection together and it has brought back some fabulous memories.

As time goes on, and when I get some more spare time I will keep adding my photos as there are many more that I have yet to add.

‘Life as a Wedding Cake Maker’ is definitely not a 9 -5 job but after late nights of baking and cake decorating, being able to deliver my wedding cakes to all parts of the South East, London,  and South West is a pleasure and I would personally like to thank every Bride & Groom that has asked me to be part of their wedding day.

If you would like to contact me regarding your wedding cake you can send me an email from my website Dairy Cottage Cake Designs or call me direct on 07933707138.

My 17 Money Wise Wedding Cake Ideas

As a new Bride to be your wedding budget will always be in the back of your mind, so today I wanted to share with you some ideas and tips on how to still have a great tasting professionally made and decorated wedding cake, that not only looks fantastic but will save you money, not only on your wedding cake but even with your table decoration!

My 17 Money Wise Wedding Cake Ideas

Have large hand crafted sugar flowers, these will make more of an impact on your wedding cake and will not cost you as much as small sprays of  sugar flowers.

If you wanted to have an impressive 4 or 5 tier wedding cake, cake ‘dummies’ can be used, saving you money on the baking costs, or have all ‘dummy’ cakes and ask family and friends to bake cakes which can be cut  and served to your guests.

Are you creative but not confident to stack and ice your wedding cake? Why not order a wedding cake that is just iced and edged with ribbon and you add your own decoration!

Have your wedding cake covered with butter cream rather than fondant icing, it is not as expensive.

Considering cup cakes? Small cup cake towers can be placed on each table as a centre piece, dressed with a few fresh flowers, replace the need for a floral table centre piece.

Grow your own flowers to dress a plain cake, there look great arranged underneath the wedding cake and for decoration on the Naked Wedding Cakes.

Serve your wedding cake as a dessert, the Naked Wedding cake is perfect for this, have extra fruit, cream or ice cream.

Your cake flavours can add extra costs, my vanilla, chocolate, lemon or coffee flavours are all priced the same. Fruit, Red Velvet or Carrot cake are more expensive.

Try to avoid your reception or caterer charging you a cutting of the cake fee.

A square wedding cake may be slightly more expensive but you will get more servings, so you may not need to order such a large cake.

A dessert table gives you the option to have a smaller wedding cake, set amongst a selection of dessert cakes. Use different height cake stands to add more of an impact to your display.

Silk flowers look wonderful on wedding cakes and can be kept as a wedding day keepsake.

I can create many ‘lace’ effects on your wedding cake, which does not involve piping with royal icing which can take a lot of time.

Cup cakes decorated with a butter cream ‘Rose Swirls’ are very effective and with the addition of a few extra flowers you Wedding Cup Cake tower will look very impressive!

Cookie favour biscuits are a great way to bring your wedding colours together, and liven up your tables. Have your guests name iced on them or attach a gift tag and they serve as place settings as well.

Bread Pudding

Bread Pudding, one of my favourites, but has to be home made, uses left overs and tastes delicious!

A very traditional recipe, dating back to the 11th Century and once known as ‘the poor man’s pudding’,  Bread Pudding is now being seen on many trendy restaurant dessert menus.

The main ingredient being stale bread, I have been collecting my loaf crusts and freezing them until I had enough.

To make Bread Pudding you will need about 10 mins preparation time and approx 1 1/2 hrs in the oven.

The Ingredients

  • 500g Bread
  • 500g Mixed dried fruit
  • 1 1/2 tbsp Mixed Spice
  • 600 ml Milk
  • 2 Eggs, beaten
  • 140g light Muscovado Sugar
  • 100g Butter, melted
  • Demerara Sugar for sprinkling over the top

Large Bowl,  wooden spoon, baking tin and fingers!

Bread Pudding is a very hands on dish, first break all your bread up into small pieces into your bowl, stir in the mixed fruit, mixed spice, sugar and milk and then put your hands in the bowl and squeeze it all together.

Leave this for 15 mins, in the mean time line you baking tin, 8″ square or what ever tins you have at home, muffin trays would work well, giving you individual portions, just ensure your tins are lined with grease proof paper.

Melt the butter, put the oven on 180 C.

After 15 mins stir in the butter and pour your bread pudding mixture into your tin, scatter the demerara sugar over the top and place in the oven. Cooking time is approx 1 1/2 hrs, if you find the top of your Bread Pudding is cooking too quick cover with some foil.

Your bread Pudding is cooked once the topped has turned darker and is firm to touch, remove from the oven and cool on a cooling rack.

I cut mine into square portions whilst it is still warm and serve hot or cold with ice cream, custard or cream with a sprinkling of icing sugar over the top.

As Christmas is approaching I am going make some more and add some brandy soaked fruit, nuts and orange zest.

I’m sure your Bread Pudding will stay fresh for at least 7 days, but if your family is like mine, it will be gone by day 2!

The Naked Wedding Cake – My Story

My first ever Naked wedding cake was nearly 3 years ago, commissioned by one of the pop band members of The Feeling, no pressure then!

The venue was in a private school located in Somerset and what a magnificent venue and setting. The views where outstanding.
The couple decided on a four tier Naked Wedding Cake, filled with strawberries, chantilly cream and strawberry coulis.
With over a 100 guests attending, timing is crucial for the set up off the Naked Wedding Cake due to the use of fresh cream, the cakes have to be eaten within a set period of time, ( Food hygiene regs). So they are being assembled when most Bride & Grooms are making their wedding vowels.
When a naked wedding cake is for a venue some distance away from me I do all the assembly on the premises, for this wedding I was working amongst the caterers, busy preparing the wedding breakfast. And they worked extremely quiet and methodical and you feel the pressure amongst them.
When making a wedding cake I tend to just loose myself in the moment, just focusing on what job has to be done next, ever aware of the ticking clock.
When all the assembling was complete the cake was taken on a trolley into the great hall where the wedding breakfast was being held, and with my bucket full of fresh roses I started the decoration. 40 roses were used for this cake, looking at the picture at a glance you would probably think there was about 10!
I can honestly say the last rose was positioned as the guests started emerging into the wedding breakfast hall, where they were watching and admiring the process.
When decorating a naked wedding cake, the flowers and fresh fruits are carefully positioned around the cake, where I balance the colours, size of the flowers and fruits. This is soo important to the final display.
The naked wedding cake was served as a dessert, drizzled with fruit coulis and I was even invited to the wedding breakfast, eating the cake I had made amongst the guests. This was rather nerve racking, but the naked wedding cake was extremely well received.
I finished my day celebrating this beautiful wedding with their other guests, which included Sophie Ellis Baxter, who provided fantastic music through out the evening. I really got to appreciate how she is in the music industry, the mix of music was so diverse but worked amazingly.
The Naked Wedding Cake has become an extremely popular choice of wedding cake, its beauty blending so well into the Rustic and Vintage style weddings and being served as a delicious dessert for the Wedding Breakfast, where  cake be accompanied with fresh fruit couli, summer fruits, ice cream or cream.
For a Rustic look, the Naked wedding cake can be displayed on a ‘Tree Trunk’ style cake stand, decorated with fresh flowers and fruits.
I have been privileged ever since this Naked Wedding Cake order to do  many more and it is definitely one of my favourites. My naked wedding cakes can be seen on my website Naked Wedding Cakes and here are a selection below.
If you are considering having a Naked Wedding Cake for your wedding, please feel free to contact me for any advice on portion sizes, number of wedding cake tiers or my prices. My contact email is here or call me directly on 07933707138.
